ANZAC Day falls on 25 April and serves as a day to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all New Zealand and Australian servicemen and servicewomen. This year ANZAC Day falls on a Monday, which means another long weekend! So, we've compiled a list of ANZAC initiatives happening in the city this year and some extra ideas that'll be sure to keep you entertained.
ANZAC Day events
Check out the Sky Tower that will shine like a giant poppy | Sky Tower
For ANZAC day this year, the Sky Tower will shine like a giant poppy, symbolising remembrance and hope. The PWC building, Quay Street lights and the Queen Street lights will also light up to show support.
Watch the Vector Lights ANZAC display | Auckland Harbour Bridge
The Vector lights will also shine bright with a dynamic light show to commemorate ANZAC Day from April 22-25. The show will run from 6pm until midnight each day, as well as 5am – 7am on 25 April.
ANZAC Remembrance Walk | Commercial Bay Air Bridge
Many historic events have taken place around Commercial Bay, including the departure of troops in the great European and Pacific Wars, Commercial Bay's ANZAC remembrance walk invites you to learn about these times and pay respects for the sacrifices made. Support the RSA and collect your poppy from the Commercial Bay Concierge desk, available until ANZAC Day.
Warbirds over Tāmaki
Over both Poppy Day (April 22) and ANZAC Day, the New Zealand Warbirds Association will be doing a flyover across the Tāmaki Makaurau region. This is scheduled to start from 11am on Poppy Day and 12 noon on ANZAC Day and will start with a pass over Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum before heading over the city centre. The flyover will then travel over suburbs across the region.
Giapo | 12 Gore Street
Giapo has made a delicious Jumbo Anzac cookie, which is of course, gluten-free like everything they do. $1 from every cookie sale will go to RSA NEW ZEALAND.
The cookie is a combination of caramelised sugar, baking soda, golden syrup, browning butter, rice and corn crisps, and it is completely and utterly irresistible. Giapo also discovered that these biscuits lend themselves beautifully to becoming ice cream. So they've also created the Anzac cookies and Cream ice cream flavour for the occasion.
The limited-edition cookie and ice cream are available for pre-order now on the Giapo app and ANZAC weekend only in-store.
Daily Bread | 30 Customs Street East & 33 Federal Street
ANZAC biscuits have hit the Daily Bread bakery shelves this week! A memorial classic. Heavy on the butter & golden syrup. Perfect with a filter or black coffee. Available online & in-store.
Little 'Lato | Auckland Fish Market
The Easter treats have been devoured, so now Little 'Lato are onto the golden syrup goodness of ANZAC Cookies! They've partnered with Cookie Dough Collective to develop an exclusive gelato - ANZAC Cookie Dough! Creamy golden syrup gelato topped with toasted coconut and chunks of buttery oat-packed cookie dough. Drooling already? We certainly are.
Other things to do over ANZAC weekend
Head down to Aotea Square to interact with this intriguing, bright yellow artwork that will make rainbows appear before your eyes! While you're in the area, why not try a Toro Churro, Popa's Pretzel or a croffle (yes, that's a waffle made from a croissant) from Cosmo Coffee.
