Taimoana | Coastlines celebrates the art of Aotearoa New Zealand, set within the broader Pacific region of Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa. Starting with the concept of coastlines, the exhibition explores a diverse range of ideas through selected works from Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki's collection.
The coast plays a vital role in the lives of many in Aotearoa New Zealand, historically and culturally significant in te ao Māori (the Māori world). It serves as a source of sustenance, a path for travel, a place for recreation, and sometimes a frontline of danger due to climate change. The exhibition delves into these themes, with artists spanning centuries reflecting on the Pacific's vastness, the vessels navigating its waters, and personal connections to the shore amidst colonial legacies.
Due to the Gallery’s Heritage Restoration Project: Kia Whakahou, Kia Whakaora, the exhibition will open in stages over the next few months, culminating in the full display from Wednesday, 18th September 2024.
