Julian (1932–2022) and Josie (1943–2010) Robertson, generous American philanthropists, cherished their connection with Aotearoa New Zealand since their first visit in 1978–79. Grateful for the friendships they formed here, they pledged a remarkable gift of significant artworks to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in 2009. Collaborating closely with the Robertsons, the Gallery carefully selected 15 masterpieces by influential modern European artists from their collection, including works by Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dalí, and Pablo Picasso. In 2023, the Robertson Gift officially became part of the Gallery’s permanent collection and is currently showcased in the exhibition The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity.
This library exhibit invites you to explore the captivating stories behind three paintings from the Robertson Gift, delving into their exhibition histories. Through exhibition catalogues, installation views, and labels, you can discover the intriguing journeys these artworks have undertaken, the exhibitions they've graced, interpretations by curators and critics, and how their titles and dates evolved over time. These three works were cherished by the Robertsons, although Julian once joyfully exclaimed, ‘I have to say I love all my paintings.’
