A man haunted by the present… consumed by the past

Paul’s wife Marie has died, and he spends all his time in a room full of relics of the past, sunk in memories. Into this airless mausoleum bursts a force of life, the dancer Mariette – who bears a striking resemblance to Marie.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold is that very rare thing, a forgotten genius, and the rediscovery of his gloriously lush, intensely romantic music is long overdue. Written in the shadow of the First World War, this great opera is a heartbreaking psychological portrait of someone coming to terms with a terrible loss.

Giordano Bellincampi leads an enormous orchestra and a stellar cast. Aleš Briscein has sung the role of Paul at the Dresden Semperoper, and Richard Šveda returns after a marvelous performance as Don Giovanni for the APO in 2019.

The New Zealand premiere of Die tote Stadt will be, quite simply, one of this country’s artistic highlights of 2023. Don’t miss it!
