What we choose to remember explores ideas of nation building to consider how knowledge of significant historic events is mythologised and passed down over time. Often informed by a personal story, memory or experience, the four artists in the exhibition address major conflicts and upheavals pertinent to their own nation’s identities.
This exhibition features two gripping film works: Thai artist Tada Hengsapkul confronts Thailand’s buried political past, including its role in the Vietnam War, while Turkish filmmaker Köken Ergun offers a provocative take on the Gallipoli/Çanakkale campaign.
Paintings by Hiria Anderson respond to the 2024 Hīkoi mō te Tiriti, sparked by the Government’s Treaty Principles Bill. Kulimoe’anga Stone Maka presents a striking new ngatu tā’uli, exploring the historic bond between Tonga and Britain through the friendship of Queen Sālote Tupou III and Queen Elizabeth II.
