Auckland Transport's integrated public transport network makes bus travel around the city quicker and easier.
The Link bus service connects the city centre and inner suburbs, local networks get people to and from North, South, East and West Auckland, and services run frequently between the city centre and the airport as well as New Zealand's regional centres.
Auckland Transport also has a fantastic Night Bus service, and Northern Express (NX1 and NX2) services also provide easy ways to get home if you're out late.
Check out the current bus timetables here, or find routes, fares and other information by using Auckland Transport's bus, train and ferry journey planner here.
How to pay for public transport
Bus fares can be paid using an AT HOP card. The AT HOP card is a reusable prepaid travel card that can be purchased online or at selected retailers, and must be topped up prior to travel.
You can also use your contactless debit or credit card, smartphone or smart device. Just be sure to tag on and off using the same payment method.
Fares are calculated based on how many zones you travel through, rather than how many buses or trains you take. Use the Journey Planner to plan your trip and find out how much you'll pay.
Cash is not accepted on buses. If you're travelling with someone who doesn’t have a HOP card or contactless payment, you can use your HOP card credit to buy a single-trip paper ticket for them—just ask the driver.
Discounts and concessions are available for day and monthly passes, and for children, students and accessible passengers. New Zealand residents with a Supergold card can travel for free on trains and selected bus and ferry services in Auckland, after 9am weekdays and all day weekends and public holidays with an AT HOP card loaded with a SuperGold public transport concession. Concessions are only available when using an AT HOP card. See the AT website for more information about fares and discounts.
Did you know you can bring your furry friend with you to explore the city centre?
Pawtastic news, pets will now be allowed to travel on Auckland's trains following two trials and a survey of train customers. Pets can go on trains between nine in the morning and three in the afternoon and after 6:30 at night. They can travel all-day on weekends and on public holidays. All dogs must either be wearing an approved muzzle and lead or can be travelling in an approved pet carrier. Happy travels with your pets!
