Following Viaduct Harbour’s debut 2020 Rainbow Pride celebration, the waterfront hospitality precinct will this year bring an open air Rainbow Cinema concept to life with Rialto Channel.

From Wednesday 24th to Sunday 28th February 2021, a series of five critically acclaimed films traversing LGBTTQI+ related topics and characters will screen at 8pm each night at the ‘Upper Deck’ in Market Square.

  • Thursday 25th Feb 8pm –– Celebration: Yves Saint Laurent (2007, PG) directed by Olivier Meyrou
    The last few years of genius at the helm of Yves Saint Laurent’s self-made fashion behemoth, before his exit from the house in 2002.
     
  • Friday 26th Feb 8pm –– Halston (2019, M) directed by Frédéric Tcheng
    Prodigiously talented, Halston reigned over fashion in the 1970s and became a household name. But everything changed in the Wall Street era.
     
  • Saturday 27th Feb 8pm –– Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019, M) directed by Céline Sciamma
    In 1770 the young daughter of a French countess develops a mutual attraction to the female artist commissioned to paint her wedding portrait
     
  • Sunday 28th Feb 8pm –– Jean Paul Gaultier: Freak or Chic (2018, M) directed by Yann L'Henoret
    Go behind the scenes of the fashion innovator's most outrageous project yet 'Fashion Freak Show'.


While the RAINBOW CINEMA is a free, public event; spaces are limited and therefore it is recommended cinema guests reserve a spot through Eventfinda. Each Eventfinda ticket will secure a coveted bean bag or lounge chair position in front of the big screen by way of a donation to OUTLine NZ –– with full proceeds going to the organisation’s rainbow-affirming support line providing free, confidential counselling and trans peer support services for all ages.

The Upper Deck area in Market Square is adjacent to eateries Oyster & Chop, O’Hagan’s and Hello Beasty, the latter of which are offering takeaway orders which are encouraged for enjoyment during the cinema.
