Alight
“In the early 2000’s there were a number of gay bars clustered around O’Connell Street and Upper Vulcan Lane such as Flesh, Queen’s Ferry, and G.A.Y. It was a gay scene I was part of for a long time. Upper Vulcan Lane was an area I could escape the alcohol, drugs, and drama, and slowly wind down. Alight represents this resting, landing, settling where one could sober up and talk without yelling over music. It represents the parallel universe one might have experienced whilst intoxicated – a glistening, colourful realm where fantasy and reality merge.” – Shannon Novak
Changing Lanes is a collaborative project between Artweek and Heart of the City, bringing together projects that will transform Auckland’s urban spaces as part of Artweek. Funded by Heart of the City.
The project aims to help create connections in our community, provide opportunities for artists and enhance public spaces. A selection of leading New Zealand artists will activate city centre laneways and these projects will reference Auckland's unique heritage and signal the changing nature of the city's urban spaces and potential future use of the sites.
