History, heritage and culture are brought to life at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Founded in 1888, it remains New Zealand’s largest visual arts experience. The building is striking with beautiful Kauri columns and a canopy that stand tall above you as you approach the building.
The renovation of the building in 2011 resulted in an award for the building as World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival.
The light-filled North Atrium continues to draw people to enjoy views out to Queen Street, and there are glimpses of Albert Park visible from some of the gallery floors. There's lots to explore at the gallery. The Learning Centre has great resources related to the exhibitions that come to the gallery and the Auckland Art Gallery shop has a great range of exclusive art gifts including reproductions and publications.
There are regular tours of the building, as well as permanent collections and temporary exhibitions from major international galleries. There are regular family-friendly events and events associated with regular exhibitions.
The Auckland Art Gallery also has a hidden gem - a theatre that often shows arthouse films.
