In this all-intensive weekend workshop, you will encounter techniques, insights, and learn life-long painting skills! Each day includes a 45-minute break for lunch and runs from 10:30am–4pm Saturday and Sunday.
About the course
Discover and develop your portrait-painting skills in this weekend workshop at Auckland Art Gallery. Join in on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June to immerse yourself in art, meet new people and uncover the extraordinary possibilities of oil paint in depicting the human form.
What you will learn
Students will be introduced to oil painting techniques to enhance their understanding of contemporary and traditional approaches to portrait painting and drawing. Students will focus on producing one long-pose portrait painting, beginning with contour drawing and developing skills in creating volume and chiaroscuro (depth of light and shade) before progressing to alla prima (wet-on-wet) painting.
Students will get an exclusive, guided tour of the Mackelvie Gallery with a curator, looking at Henry Raeburn’s portrait 'Master James Hay', 1790–96 and Willian Beechey’s 'Miss Windham', 1828 to gain a greater understanding of the techniques used by traditional portrait artists.
Adult Learning is generously supported by Gordon Harris The Art & Graphic Store.
