Basement Theatre is a hidden gem in our city.
If you wander through the back of Aotea Square and the Town Hall you will come across what feels like an uber cool back street of Melbourne or New York. Local artists have coloured the walls with graffiti and a large garage door entrance glows out from the brick building, welcoming you in with its warm glow. The sound of music and chatter of jostling theatre goers woos you into the space and you arrive never quite knowing what you’re going to get.
At Basement Theatre, emerging artists and creatives get to test their new ideas in the realms of theatre, visual arts, music and dance. The wonder of this is that you are often privy to discovering new talents in the theatre world long before others.
If you are new to trying out theatre you can also do so here at low risk, with reasonable ticket prices that won't break your wallet. There's also a cosy bar where you can grab a craft beer and share a drink with the artists after a show or hear a local DJ and dance away the night.
