Poppy tears, opium, heroin, fentanyl: humankind has been in thrall to the Milk of Paradise – as a hugely addictive bringer of sleep, pleasurable lethargy, relief from pain – for millennia. The story of heroin is a history of the world, from ancient Mesopotamia to modern America and Afghanistan, from Sanskrit to pop, from morphine to today’s synthetic opiates. In Milk of Paradise: A History of Opium, social historian Lucy Inglis provides an ambitious, wide-ranging and compelling tale of addiction, trade, crime, sex, war, literature, medicine and, above all, money, across the ages and the globe. She speaks with Tom Moody.
