Many of Catherine Chidgey’s novels feature child narrators, from In a Fishbone Church to The Wish Child to Pet (and, arguably, to Tama Magpie in The Axeman’s Carnival).
In this workshop with the twice winner of the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction you will look at some examples from Chidgey’s books as she discusses how she created these characters and their voices.
You will then be guided through a series of exercises to help you to practise writing your own child narrators and learn how to create three-dimensional figures who ring true, without ever sounding saccharine or twee.
