Over a career spanning thirty years, Winkelmann employed his glass plate camera to record streetscapes, shops and industries, and the changing skyline of the city of Auckland. His particular talent lay in the creation of panoramic views by taking a series of inter-connecting sequential photographs.
During the Covid-19 lockdown library staff identified 150 stunning panoramas hidden amongst the 2000-plus Winkelmann negatives. The individual images have now been digitally stitched together to recreate the panoramas as Winkelmann would have envisaged them.
A selection of panoramas forms the core of this exhibition. All of the 150 panoramic views can be seen on the Library’s Kura Heritage Images database, here.
