Henrietta Harris loved drawing as a kid, and went on to make a career as a painter. Now her delicate portraits sell in New Zealand and the United States, and are blown up big on Britomart’s Te Ara Tahuhu in an exhibition entitled ‘By Its Own Light’.

Take a walk along Te Ara Tahuhu to see the enigmatic portraits from Henrietta Harris's 'By Its Own Light' series, in an experience that ripples between observing and feeling observed. Contemplative or caught unawares, her subjects are rendered with delicate precision or scribbled out with splotches, exploring perfectionism and perspective. They're interspersed with more freehand landscape works that Henrietta turned to when a bout of nerve damage made the fine brushwork of portraiture a challenge.
