Capturing contemporary life in dizzyingly changing China, An Yu’s debut novel is aptly loaded with curve balls. An odyssey of a widowed artist – through nocturnal Beijing and rural Tibet, and through loss and liberation via a watery otherworld – it’s a surreal ride. “Poised between silliness and high seriousness, contrasting narrative wildness with cool prose, the novel ignores the conventional advice “tell a dream, lose a reader,” according to The Guardian. A Beijing native, Yu has a fine arts degree from New York University, and a jewellery business in Hong Kong. She joins Ruby Porter to give her singular take on China.
