At 18 Paul Wood received a mandatory life sentence for murdering his drug dealer. He subsequently became the first person in NZ to study for undergraduate and post-graduate degrees while incarcerated – he was part-way through a PhD in differential psychology from Massey University when he was released from jail in 2006. Wood is now a motivational speaker, patron of START Taranaki which works with at-risk young men, a regular prison visitor, and the author of How to Escape from Prison in which he chronicles his courageous turnaround. He talks to Leanne Pooley, about his life and, among other things, the need to teach emotional literacy in schools.
