Winter is about to get a whole lot tastier with the return of the annual Great NZ Toastie Takeover.
Celebrating the delicious Kiwi staple that is the not-so-humble toasted sandwich, eateries right around the country will once again be putting their unique spin on the iconic snack.
The competition element of the Great NZ Toastie Takeover returns this year, with 125 establishments vying for the title of New Zealand’s top toasted sandwich in 2021. Among them, 11 city centre eateries are taking up the challenge.
Each toastie will be scored on a set criteria, including presentation, effectiveness of preparation technique, eatability, taste, innovation and originality. The supreme winner will be announced on July 1st, and will walk away with a year’s worth of pickles, dine-in vouchers, a toastie trophy – and most importantly, bragging rights to the best toasted sandwich in the country.

BURGER BURGER - $18
Toastie Burger - 2 x Mozzarella & onion toasties, BB's NZ grass-fed beef patty (170g), McClure's Pickles, aged cheddar, mustard, tomato jam & mayo.
DAILY BREAD - $15
Pork and Pickled Puha - Fire roasted ham hock, kale cooked in pork stock, cheddar, horseradish and McClure's pickles béchamel.
DIRTY LAUNDRY - $24.95 with truffle fries or salad
Tuna Melt - Fijian tuna on Olaf 's Rudi (rye), smoked butter, provolone, McClure's pickle verde, McClure's Spicy Pickle Popper.

Cochinita Toastie - Our toastie is a South American infusion of cochinita pibil with an Auckland made, artisan, Oaxaca cheese. Stuffed full of McClure's Sweet & Spicy Pickles, rocket and given a kick from habanero coriander aioli, this beauty is held all together by perfectly toasted rosemary sourdough and paired with fries. The cochinita pibil, is marinated overnight, bound inside banana leaves for added flavour and then slow-cooked for four, long hours. The 'Cochinita Toastie' from Spectra cafe holds with it a mass of South American flavours, igniting warmth and feelings of crossing over to the elusive foodie heaven.

Fidel Gastro - Mouth-watering layers of house-smoked cuban pork, glazed ham, piccante salami and swiss cheese, all topped with McClure's Bread & Butter Pickles and served in toastie bread spread with homemade mustard sauce.
