Come along on a Young Members field trip to Upstairs Gallery in Titirangi for an action-packed afternoon including an exhibition viewing, two artist talks, a short film screening and a drawing workshop.

Embark on an exciting Young Members field trip to Auckland Art Gallery with them! Join in for an action-packed afternoon filled with engaging activities, including an exhibition viewing, two artist talks, a short film screening, and a dynamic drawing workshop.

The first stop will be at DOWNTOWN 23, an exhibition showcasing the works of four emerging West Auckland artists. This thought-provoking show challenges stereotypes of young men navigating their journey into manhood, drawing inspiration from graffiti, the urban landscape, and the street-art-style paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Following a captivating conversation with artists Java Leonard and Fauze Hassen, the group will head to the historic film theatre at Lopdell House for a screening and discussion of Fauze's short film, "Photographing Dead Flowers." The event will conclude with a free-style drawing workshop led by Java Leonard, where participants can unleash their creativity using simple mediums like charcoal and graphite on paper and card. Plus, enjoy a non-alcoholic drink courtesy of Almighty, with the option to purchase alcoholic beverages.

Young Members are invited to bring a friend and enjoy this exclusive event designed for those under 40. However, if you're young at heart, feel free to join in!

About the Exhibition:

DOWNTOWN 23 draws inspiration from the 2000 film "Downtown 81," featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat in the early 80s art scene of post-punk New York. This exhibition, featuring works by Java Leonard, Fauze Hassen, REKSO, and Valkyria, captures the diversity of creative expression as these artists navigate the urban environment with raw energy. Challenge stereotypes and explore the unique perspectives of these emerging talents.

Free-Style Drawing Workshop:

Java Leonard, known for his mixed-media and large-scale works, will guide participants through an explorative and free-flowing drawing workshop. Using simple mediums, participants will capture interesting characters, objects, words, and abstract mark-making. This hour-long workshop is suitable for all levels of artistic experience.
