LATE NIGHT ART 10 October, 6pm - 9pm
Poi Magic at Aotea Square_Auckland Artweek

For Late Night Art, a poi so large it could have been made by a giant lands in Aotea Square. The taura (handles) of the poi are five metres long, with the poi head made of recycled polyethylene.

Inspired by the vision of artist Mei Hill in her glass exhibition ‘Poi Poi Poi’, this creative fusion combines the skills of Mei along with Olivia Haddon, weaver Tania Remana and light artist Angus Muir.

The installation celebrates the history and future of Māori performance art in the Aotea precinct in this time of change and redevelopment. The work is created with rangatahi and tamariki in mind, being the heroes of the future.

Explore all the wonders, mysteries and stories of the poi while listening to kapa haka performances. Enjoy the magic of the lit taura (handle) as it snakes across the whariki (mat). Listen to the sound and rhythm of the flying poi!

** Kapa Haka Performance, 6pm **

Funded by Auckland Council and delivered in partnership with Mei Hill, Tania Remana, Olivia Haddon, Angus Muir and Artweek Auckland.
