You will draw from live models and enjoy exclusive, behind-the-scenes viewings of a selection of artworks in the Gallery’s collection to learn different artists’ approaches to drawing the human form.

Over the ten-week course, you will develop your own individual style while learning historical approaches to life drawing and the skills we can use in the present day. Key ideas explored are anatomy, proportion, lighting, shading and gestural techniques.

Whether you’re a beginner or a confident creator, join them in the studio to flex your creative skills in a friendly, inspiring environment.

About the tutor:

Heyes Johnson is a visual artist and teacher based in Tāmaki Makarau Auckland. Over 20 years working in tertiary and community education has led Heyes to develop a student-focused approach to teaching that fosters effective and enjoyable learning environments. Recently, Heyes completed a Master of Visual Arts at Auckland University of Technology, where his research explored the extent to which a photograph can capture the fluid and dynamic process of making drawings. Heyes’ drawing classes are designed to develop the fundamentals of observational drawing practice, whilst cultivating an individual’s self-expression.
