Every Thursday throughout June, the Ellen Melville Centre is celebrating the start of Matariki, with a selection of unique events that share with you taonga (treasures) from within Te Ao Māori.
Hauora Evening | 13 Jun, 5pm-8pm
Ellen Melville centre invites you to experience the healing practices within Te Ao Māori, with free Mirimiri (Māori massage) treatments and Oro (sound) healing sessions. Book in for a Mirirmiri session with traditional healers, led by Wai-Sharne Raynes (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei) and Tracey Leigh Te Paa, as they open their practice to the community to experience the restorative healing of Mirimiri.

Be immersed in the music from this whenua (land) with Taonga Puoro practitioner Komako Silver (Ngā Pakahi, Ngā Puhi) bringing alive the beautiful voices of traditional Māori instruments and their pūngao oro (sound energy) to release, relax and restore. Whare Tāpere | 20 Jun, 5pm-8pm
Enjoy an evening of manaakitanga and entertainment with us, as we engage with the traditional space of the Whare Tāpere, or house of entertainment. Ellen Melville Centre comes alive with a live performances by The Mighty Herbsmen, a traditional Māori shared meal to sample and games to take part in. A space for all community to join in the festivities and share in Te Ao Māori experiences.
Matariki Markets | 27 Jun, 5pm-8pm
Spend the evening before the Matariki public holiday at Ellen Melville Centre, enjoying the festivities of the Matariki markets.
Freyberg Square will come alive with a celebration of our local creativity, talent and Māori culture with craft and food stalls, workshops, and music performances for all to enjoy.
