The Māori Portraits

Gottfried Lindauer (1839–1926) is one of New Zealand’s most prolific portrait painters of the late 19th and early 20th century and is a key cultural figure in New Zealand’s art history.

Following the recent success of largest ever exhibition of Gottfried Lindauer’s portraits here at the Gallery, a selection travelled to DeYoung Art Museum in San Francisco in what is now the fourth major international showing of Lindauer’s Māori portraits in recent years.

With The Māori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer’s New Zealand – Te Hokinga Mai we welcome them home and celebrate their return from their international tour.
