John Williams:  Star Wars & Schindler’s List | Inspired by the large-scale orchestral music of Tchaikovsky and Wagner, Williams’ name has become synonymous with dramatic and powerful scores, such as the famous themes of Star Wars.  Yet the Three Pieces from Schindler’s List reveal his mastery of writing heart-wrenchingly sad and haunting themes.  His compositions have become integral to the success of the movies themselves and are familiar to almost everyone!

Hans Zimmer:  Pirates of the Caribbean | Soak up the swashbuckling score for the famous, rhythmic music from Pirates of the Caribbean, written by award-winning German composer Hans Zimmer.  Zimmer has written scores for more than 150 films, including The Lion King, Gladiator, The Batman Trilogy, Inception, The Simpsons Movie and Interstellar.

Ennio Morricone: The Mission (Nella Fantasia) & Cinema Paradiso (Love Theme) | These two works, originally written for oboe and violin respectively, have both since become well-known and loved songs, performed by many famous singers.

Joe Hisaishi:  My Neighbour Totoro | This animated film from the 1980s has recently been brought to life on stage in England, complete with live performance of the accompanying score.  Having written the scores for over hundred films, Hisaishi has been hailed as “Japan’s John Williams”.

The Artists:

Soprano Tayla Alexander: Tayla performs both opera and classical crossover music commercially.  She has received many awards and in 2021 was a special solo guest with SOL3MIO at Spark Arena,  a soloist at Opera in the Park in 2022 and recently performed in NZ Opera’s “The Unruly Tourists”.

Violin / Concert Master Jim Wu: Jim is no stranger to the stage as a soloist, having performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto and the Butterfly Lovers Concerto with Auckland Youth Orchestra and Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe with Camille Wells with Bach Musica NZ.  He has been the Concertmaster of the Auckland Youth Orchestra for over a decade.
