Winter is about to get a whole lot tastier with the launch of the sixth annual Great NZ Toastie Takeover! This year there are seven mouthwatering creations to try in the city centre where some of your favourite eateries have put their unique spin on the delicious Kiwi staple that is the not-so-humble toasted sandwich.
The competition rules remain the same as previous years. Each toastie must be sandwiched between two slices of bread and able to be eaten by hand if necessary. The toasted sandwich must also contain cheese (or an acceptable vegan substitute) and pickles from the McClure’s Pickles range. Everything else is up to the toastie maker’s imagination – and those imaginations have certainly been in overdrive this year!

Daily Bread
Grandmother's Toastie: Mapo tofu, pork mince, roasted eggplant, silken tofu, fermented black bean, mozzarella & McClure's Sweet & Spicy Pickles on a wakame seaweed & pickle juice sourdough, finished with grated parmesan.
Deli di Bossi
Mortadella: Thinly sliced mortadella (Italian sausage), mozzarella, smoked provola & McClure's Bread & Butter Pickles on freshly baked in-house focaccia bread.
Dr Rudi's
PB&J Toastie: Crispy pork belly, slow cooked beef brisket, jalapeño philly cheese whip, McClure's Sweet & Spicy Pickles, American cheddar & Rudi's whiskey BBQ sauce on house baked focaccia. Served with McClure's Garlic & Dill fried pickles, jalapeño mac & cheese bite & a McClure's pickle-back Bloody Mary shooter.
Little Culprit.
Butter You Hungry Yet?: On thick buttered Rye, McClure's Sweet & Spicy Pickles and a thick layer of brown butter infused, melty gruyere cream. With hints of caramelised onion and caraway - it is their take on "Korozott", a thick savoury Hungarian cheese spread.
Saint Alice
Fried Chicken Toastie: Masala fried chicken, aged cheddar, McClure's Pickles, onion jam, miso caramel with a mango chutney dipping sauce. Served with fries.
Parasol & Swing Company
The Smash Effect: Double smashed beef patties & American cheese, with McClure's Sweet & Spicy Pickles, Parasol's burger sauce & red onion.
Toasty
Mc. Galbi: Toasty's soft and fluffy Asian-style thick OG Loaf, Mc. Sauce (enhanced with McClure's pickle juice), fancy lettuce, double tteokgalbi (traditional Korean dish made from minced meat with sweet and savoury flavour), scrambled eggs an McClure's pickles.
