Take a night off cooking duties and get bang for buck with the $15 Cheap and Cheerful dinner deals Auckland city centre has on offer throughout May. If you need help deciding where to go first, check out our top picks below.
Pre event, or when you're short on time
Within a hop, skip and a jump of several of the city centre’s great performing arts venues is Tanuki Japanese Restaurant. As you walk in through the beaded curtain, this hidden treasure will transport you to an intimate sake bar in the heart of Japan. Their deluxe beef and prawn skewers on offer as part of May's $15 Cheap & Cheerful Eats also come with a glass of Hallertau Auckland No.9 beer.
Le Chef is the perfect choice if you’re wanting to be adventurous and try out something new – escargots! This French delicacy isn’t one you come by often but is a definite must-try when you do. Get a dozen of Le Chef’s escargots (snails) served in garlic butter for just $15 in May. Pair with a glass of French chardonnay to enhance the flavours.
Head down towards the water and grab a table at Ceviche Bar by Besos Latinos. Here, you’ll be treated to authentic traditional Latin American cuisine. Order their $15 offer of ceviche or a fish taco to start, then follow it up with a selection of other small dishes. We recommend the tuna tostadas, and their salsa roja is one of the best we’ve ever tried!
Also down on the waterfront, Mar & Tierra’s South American grill in the Auckland Fish Market makes some awesome dishes and their chorizo arepa is no exception! Arepas are a traditional South American dish comprised of a fresh corn cake (arepa) and stuffed with a range of flavourful fillings. For $15, you’ll get a tasty arepa and a Coca Cola range drink.
For something hearty
When you’re looking for something a little more substantial, The Mexican Café, Brothers Beer, Big Little Grill and the Terrace Café are where you want to head.
For $14, get yourself a table at The Mexican Café and enjoy taquitos filled with slow cooked spiced beef and cheese with your choice of a margarita, house beer, or house wine to wash it all down. If beef isn't your thing, a deliciously different vegetarian option is also available.
BBQ-style food is hard not to love, and the guys at Brothers Beer make amazing spreads of this authentic southern cuisine. For $15 you’ll see a generous tasting board grace your table. Accompanied with tater tots, slaw, sauce and a glass of Brothers Beer Leisuretime Lager, you also get to choose one of their outrageously tasty proteins – free range chicken wings, pork ribs, or smoked tofu.
Located close to The Civic and near by the Aotea Centre, Big Little Grill in Elliott Stables have added a selection of their best dishes to Cheap & Cheerful Eats. Whether it be a burger and chips, chicken schnitzel with salad and chips or a chicken fillet salad and rice, you’ll be leaving fully satisfied.
At the doorstep of the Aotea Centre, The Terrace Café is a great place to stop in for a bite before a show. Take a seat looking out over the square and enjoy meatballs or arancini balls with a house beer or house wine for $15 this May.
If we haven’t already given you enough Cheep & Cheerful Eats dinner options, there’s two more worth mentioning - Gogi and Chawlas Indian Restaurant.
Fried chicken is a crowd favourite. If you’re a fan, Gogi's crispy Korean fried chicken is one you’re going to want to try. Served with rice, your choice of sauce and a soft drink, you’ll be leaving with a very happy tummy (and it only costs $15!).
Last, but certainly not least, Chawlas $12.50 offer is hard to pass up. $12.50 will get you your choice of curry, rice and naan. Add on a drink (tap beer or fizzy) for just $2.50 and you have yourself an ultimate pre or post show meal!
