The glittering music programme for these concerts features sparkling pieces by Mozart, Strauss, Debussy and Aotearoa’s own contemporary talent, including an exciting new work that reimagines three legendary Kiwi pop songs. Performed by Auckland’s professional orchestra, plus some special guests, the Community Classics: Beyond the Stars concerts are an opportunity for people to connect and experience incredible live orchestral music together.
These concerts offer an uplifting afternoon of music for everyone. Celebrate the magic of moonlight with the Debussy’s moving masterpiece, Clair de lune, and experience the power and energy of the orchestra in Mozart’s lively Cosi Fan Tutte Overture. Get cosmic with the introduction to Richard Strauss’ stirring work, Also sprach Zarathustra, which film buffs will recognise from the movie soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The dazzling music lineup also features works by Aotearoa composition stars, Salina Fisher and Lucy Mulgan. Fisher’s Galaxy will transport you to nighttime at Akoranga Harbour, gazing at the starry sky above – an experience from which the talented composer took inspiration for this piece.
The exciting new piece ‘when you and I collide’ by acclaimed Kiwi composer, Lucy Mulgan, was commissioned by the Auckland Phil to celebrate New Zealand music. This work features a medley of three iconic Kiwi pop bangers by Bic Runga, Dragon and Fat Freddy’s Drop, which will be performed by the Auckland Phil alongside talented vocalists Jessie Cassin and Rutene Spooner.
The Community Classics series is presented by Davis Funeral Care and supported by Auckland Live, and the orchestra’s core funders, Auckland Council, Creative New Zealand and Foundation North.
