Did you know that many Peruvian superfood farmers and coffee growers are lucky to receive 1-2% of the retail value of their crops here in New Zealand?
Ongoing exploitation has led many farmers and communities in Peru to breaking point where they are losing their farms, traditions, culture and a heritage that dates back over 2000 years. Our Western demand for unique medicinal foods like maca and exotic coffee blends have driven domestic Peruvian prices sky high, while the corrupt system that provides exported products exploits those who sell into it.
The food corporations in the middle get rich and create a consumer driven supply chain where we demand far more than they can sustainably produce. It's a system based on profits, not value and the dirty politics involved creates an industry ruled by a lack of ethics, a lack of sustainable practice and a disregard for the marginalised communities and farmers in Peru.
IncaFé believe it is time to bring change to an industry that is in dire need. Join them to hear why it is so important to take a stand and change the way we source our food.
Come and hear the story of a 2 small farming communities in Peru, one that grows coffee and one that grows maca. Hear first hand the impact our actions have on the people and how two New Zealand based companies are striving to bring change.
Hosted by IncaFe and Seleno Health. Both of whom are working to help the people of Peru by creating a sustainable and socially responsible model of trade.
