As well as providing what will be an incredible restaurant experience Ahi will also have an emphasis on premium and bespoke events.
Heart of the city caught up with Ben Bayly to ask him a little more on what to expect.
You have been head chef at some of New Zealand’s top restaurants, but this is the first time you have opened your own restaurant. What is the inspiration behind Ahi?
A love of New Zealand food and ingredients and the great team we have assembled.
Why did you choose Commercial Bay?
At first, I loved the location and aspect of our terraced site, it showcases the Hauraki Gulf but is still protected from the elements. Secondly, I have come to understand over the years how important the tenant/landlord relationship is. Precinct Properties (our landlord) have been amazing to deal with.
What is the inspiration behind the name Ahi?
Ahi means fire in Maori, I couldn’t open a New Zealand focused restaurant without giving it a Maori name. Fire is the heart of the kitchen & without fire we are not human.
And what is it about the dining experience at Ahi that is so unique?
I guess we will see when it opens!
