One of New Zealand’s most dynamic and acclaimed chamber ensembles, NZTrio, He Taonga Wairere are delighted to unveil their 2024 concert series, Triptych, inviting audiences to embark on a musical journey that transcends boundaries and challenges preconceptions of classical music.
Continuing their exploration of diverse musical landscapes following a triumphant and packed 2023, Ashley Brown (cello), Amalia Hall (violin), and Somi Kim (piano) present their three part concert series, taking place in May, September and November. The Triptych Series celebrates discovery, curiosity, reflection, and pure joy.
Triptych 1 - Unquiet Dream, 19 May
Experience a diverse musical landscape starting with Benjamin Britten’s ‘Introduction and Allegro for Piano Trio’, a masterpiece showcasing his distinctive harmonic language and rhythmic vitality. Dive into the enigmatic world of Lera Auerbach’s ‘Trio No. 2 Triptych – This Mirror Has Three Faces’, a thought-provoking exploration of reflection, identity, and transformation. Then, be captivated by a new work from talented New Zealand composer Chris Cree Brown. Conclude the evening with Felix Mendelssohn’s rich and expressive ‘Trio in D minor Op. 49’, balancing classical structure with Romantic lyricism.

Triptych 2 - Untrodden Ways, 18 September
Begin with Mendelssohn’s emotionally charged ‘Trio in C minor Op. 66’, followed by NZ composer Reuben Jelleyman’s innovative ‘Büchlein Reimaginings’, drawing inspiration from Bach’s chorales. Journey through Jennifer Higdon’s vibrant ‘Piano Trio’, exploring colors spread on a canvas through melodies and harmonies. Venture into the passionate realm of Armenia with Arno Babadjanian’s compelling ‘Trio in F-Sharp minor’.

Triptych 3 - Untamed Hope, 17 November
Be moved by Fanny Mendelssohn’s magnificent ‘Trio in D minor’ from 19th Century Germany. Experience the power and subtlety of Joan Tower’s ‘Trio Cavany’, followed by a new commission by Kiwi composer Eva Bedggood. Conclude with Ethel Smyth’s impassioned piano trio, showcasing the depth of emotions and creative brilliance of the British composer.
