Grieg’s large-scale works are few: the Piano Concerto, the String Quartet, and little else. His biggest single work is the incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. Even here his miniaturist instincts win out. It’s more a collection of musical short stories than a novel. Yet, as Graham Abbott demonstrates, each story is perfectly told.
