A seemingly fluffy tale about entitled tiger mothers, Liane Moriarty’s sixth novel Big Little Lies is an acute dissection of female friendship, and of abuse of various kinds. Soon after it debuted at number one in The New York Times bestseller list in 2014, movie stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon nabbed the film and TV rights, with the ensuing darkly comedic HBO series collecting Emmy and SAG gongs. Moriarty’s latest, Nine Perfect Strangers (city slickers retreat to a spa, the wellness industry gets a pasting), has been greeted warmly by fans and also optioned by the astute Kidman. Sydneysider Moriarty elaborates on her stellar trajectory, her sources of inspiration, and underwhelming human behaviour with Michele A’Court.
