Plastic Free July is kicking off in Aotearoa this year with an eco-conscious event in Wynyard Quarter. Committing to a more sustainable lifestyle and decreasing waste pollution helps shape a better world. But being good doesn’t have to mean being boring.
In an aim to educate and empower Aotearoa to make positive change, This Is The Last Straw will be screening a line up of short films focused around our environment, food, drinks, and good times. All that’s missing is the plastic.
The brain-child of Sophie Hallwright and Ella Gordon-Latty, the event will introduce a bright new way of interacting with people, products and the planet, with all proceeds going directly to Sustainable Coastlines. Proudly supported by sponsors Nudes Drinks, Blume Cooler, Garage Project and Webb’s.
This is the Last Straw has the privilege of hosting a silent auction with all proceeds going to Sustainable Coastlines for the incredible mahi they do for our oceans. Art from some of New Zealand’s top artists such as Michael Smithers, Rachel Mataira, David Kilgour and more will be up for grabs. As well as the entire Emma Lewisham skincare range, a yearly Denizen subscription, and a fully private Studiobox experience.
The afternoon will include a panel discussion with Auckland Central MP Chloe Swarbrick and Zero Waste advocate Miriama Kamo, who will steer the focus away from the doom and gloom around climate change and instead highlight how our individual efforts can make a difference, and combined, can change the world.
“We are always hearing about how doomed the earth is, when in reality we have power to turn things around,” say event organisers Ella Gordon-Latty and Sophie Hallwright. “This Is The Last Straw” aims to resonate and inspire conversations that highlight how we can all take our own small steps to being more eco-conscious”.
