New Zealand Opera’s third production for 2014 is Mozart’s Don Giovanni. This is a fresh look at Mozart's masterpiece, which looks at society in a state of moral and social collapse.
The show premiered earlier in 2013 in Christchurch to a crowd which loved the edge it had compared to its romantic side.
UK baritone Mark Stone, as the lethario Don Giovanni, and Australian Warwick Fyfe returns as Leporello. Fellow Australian Lisa Harper-Brown returns to sing Donna Anna along with fine New Zealand singers – Anna Leese as Donna Elvira, Jud Arthur as the Commendatore, and exciting young stars, Amelia Berry as Zerlina and Freemasons Resident Artist Robert Tucker as Masetto. Jaewoo Kim, who last sang with NZ Opera in 2006 in the title role in Faust, joins the cast as Don Ottavio.
Trickery, seduction, and even murder are what Don Giovanni is capable of to get what he wanted from the women he is after. The NZ Opera Director of Music Wyn Davies will double as conductor for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington and the Chapman Tripp Opera Chorus.
