The Auckland Youth Orchestra presents another exciting symphony concert.
Dukas: Villanelle for French horn and Orchestra (Soloist: Evan Metcalfe)
Khachaturian: Gayane - Ballet music from the Suites
Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No.1 (Soloist: Tony Yan Tong Chen)
Dukas’ Villanelle for French horn offers refreshing, lyrical melodies. Its fast passages reveal the skill of soloist Evan Metcalfe, AYO’s principal horn player.
Khachaturian’s dances from his "Gayane" ballet suites are popular for their energetic, lively and vibrant ethnic dances.
The thunderous, famous opening chords of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 set the scene for the rich melodies and drama that follow.
Brilliant pianist Tony Yan Tong Chen returns to Auckland especially for this concert series. He is well-known to NZ audiences, having won the Wallace New Zealand National Piano Competition in 2019. He has also performed extensively internationally and had much competitive success.
Music Director Antun Poljanich, a Conducting graduate of the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in Leningrad, has conducted AYO since 1999.
