Born in 2021, Sur-Collective is a group of 6 Latina artists whose work covers a range of disciplines including, photography, sculpture and textile art. The collective arose from the need to create a sense of place and redefine the space that we use as migrant women in Aotearoa, New Zealand. With more than ten years experience in our respective fields, our work is the reflection of our roots.
During the Late Night Art Week Sur-Collective's space activation ‘Waste to Wonder’ will create a scenario where participants can upcycle old garments, leftover yarn, and forgotten threads into beautiful mini-weavings, from wall ornaments to mini sculptures, jewellery pieces or fridge magnets. By combining weaving materials, ancient craft techniques, sustainability, and hands-on participation, this project will foster creativity while highlighting the importance of reducing waste and repurposing materials.
